MyHeritage DNA provides free family tree software together with a comprehensive genealogical bundle that includes DNA testing and matching. It helps you see where your ancestors lived on a globe and shows your results with an entertaining animation set to music. Nevertheless, the only way to go further into your findings is to look into DNA matching. In terms of DNA testing services that interface with genealogical software, AncestryDNA's offers surpass those of MyHeritage DNA. Moreover, the service lacks the more comprehensive ancestor analysis provided by its rivals.
Pricing and DNA Collection
You need to know your birth year and sex in order to order a kit. A kit from MyHeritage DNA costs $79, plus $12 for shipping. Shipping is half-price for orders of two kits; free shipping applies to orders of three or more. The next step is to choose a display name and accept the terms and services of the website.
MyHeritage DNA Ethnicities
After a week, I received my kit and immediately added its barcode to my account to register it. You must do this in order to receive your findings because kits are tracked by number rather than name. After I registered my kit online, instructions matching the box appeared on a screen.
Two vials of stabilizing solution and two swabs make up this DNA kit. The swabs have plastic arms and cotton tips. After swabbing a sample, immerse the swab into the solution. But first, it's easier said than done: you break off the plastic portion. The first time, I had to cut it off with scissors; the second time, I discovered that you could break it off by pressing it up against the vial's inner threads. Either way, I'd advise having scissors on hand.
DNA Reports and Extra Features
My results were available in a matter of weeks. Out of all the DNA kits I've tested, MyHeritage DNA has the most striking reveal. A rotating globe with local music plays when you click the email notification to view your results. When it stops, your genetic composition is displayed on a map with percentages listed to the left and hotspots indicating your ethnicity.
MyHeritage DNA's report differed slightly from 23andme and AncestryDNA's, but both findings were almost identical. It came as no surprise that it still identified me as primarily Welsh, Scottish, and Irish, but it now included 6.3 percent East European, which I had never heard of. The sound of the song changed from Celtic to Eastern European at one point.I will admit that I liked the pageantry. On the map, you can enlarge the text to see even more detail than what is now visible.
If you've previously completed the DNA test, you may upgrade your kit to access health testing (worth $49), which includes 42 reports that include details on hereditary risks for various disorders and carrier status. You must first complete a questionnaire from the company, which is then confidently checked by a doctor. After reviewing your findings, a clinical staff within the organization decides whether or not you require genetic counselling.
MyHeritage DNA Family Tree
More details regarding the areas in which your ancestors resided and potential migration reasons would be helpful. The majority of other services encourage you to look into it more. Rather, unless you choose to build a family tree, receiving your MyHeritage DNA findings feels like a final stop.
If so, you will have access to features like record matching, which retrieves information linked to individuals in your family tree, and smart matching, which locates profiles in the family trees of other members that match. A search engine on MyHeritage can sift through billions of historical records.
Lots of Fanfare, Basic Genetics
Much hype surrounds MyHeritage DNA's genetic results, but once you've researched them, there's little more to go into. I'd be interested in learning more about the lifestyle and motivations of my ancestors' migration. However, the service provides fully functional family tree software that is free of charge and has many useful options for researching family history and locating new kin. We suggest using 23andMe, our PCMag Editors' Pick for DNA testing, as they provide far more information. AncestryDNA is an excellent choice as well because it offers a wealth of research materials and family tree software.
